Indonesian conglomerate Lippo Group has established a new ISP business to bring satellite-based internet access services to rural and remote parts of the country.

The First Net internet service uses very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology to deliver speeds of between 2Mbps and 20Mbps, the Jakarta Postreported.

It is being deployed by Delta Nusantara Networks, a subsidiary of the Lippo Group's First Media, in collaboration with Indonesian satellite operator Adiwarta.

Delta Nusantara has invested around $2 million in the network so far, and plans to deploy at least two satellite transponders developed for corporate clients as part of the construction activities, the report states.

The companies believe there is significant opportunity for internet providers to target Indonesia's remote areas, where existing telecom infrastructure is lacking. They are targeting customers including schools, hospitals, mining and plantation companies and air carriers.
