Second-ranked Indonesian cellco Indosat has launched the first 42Mbps HSPA+ commercial network in Asia-Pacific, according to network partner Ericsson.

Indosat has beaten Australia’s Telstra, Singapore’s StarHub and Hong Kong’s CSL to stake its claim as the first operator in Asia-Pacific to offer theoretical download speeds of 42Mbps via HSPA+.

Ericsson also announced a new three-year Frame Agreement with Indosat on Friday, including the supply of its 6000 series base stations and MSS Blade Cluster technology.

The network modernization will provide Indosat “with the flexibility to evolve to [LTE],” said Ericsson.

The network will be “boosted by a number of green sites powered by alternative energy sources,” it said.

Network design, deployment, training and support services are also part of the agreement.

Indosat is currently serving 39.1 million subscribers in Indonesia.
