PT Indosat has launched mobile broadband on the 900-MHz band in Bali, a service the Indonesian operator is branding Super Internet.

The new UMTS 900-MHz service offers peak speeds of 42Mbps, The Jakarta Postsaid, citing an interview with Indosat head of technology operations infrastructure Ginandjar Alibasjah.

The company is selling the services through packages starting at 25,000 rupiah ($2.22) for a 6GB quota.

Indosat is the only operator with access to the 900-MHz band, Alibasjah said, noting that the lower frequency allows better indoor signal penetration and will let Indosat reach areas it previously could not cover with its UMTS 2100-MHz network.

At the moment, Indosat is providing its Super Internet service through Wi-Fi hotspot services in 450 Bali locations.

But Alibasjah said the company plans to upgrade between 5,000 and 6,000 base stations in major cities throughout Indonesia over the next two years.

Indosat secured a license to operate on the 900-MHz band in September last year. A month later, the company contracted NSN to install equipment for the network and upgrade its RAN infrastructure.
