In a publicity stunt to increase awareness of walking-while-texting danger, pedestrian advocate group Living Streets padded light poles with rugby goalpost foam bumpers on London's trendy Brick Lane. A popular internet video of intent texters bumping safely into the padded poles and not so safely into other barriers garnered great media attention. The problem is real; as many as 6.5 million Brits may be injured by the new hazard. The London Daily Mail reported that a Living Streets survey found that one out of 1,000 UK residents ran into objects, other people or vehicles while in the oblivious world of text messaging. In response several cities have considered laws outlawing texting or using iPods use while driving, bicycling or even walking. While many states now have laws banning texting while driving, New York State Senator Carl Kruger introduced a bill that would ban pedestrians from using earphones in crosswalks. Picture your tombstone in 2014: 'He Died While Texting'.
