Intel is developing its own web-based TV services, as part of preparations for the semiconductor firm to enter the pay-TV business, a report said.

The Wall Street Journal report also said Intel “hopes to sell the service” to US consumers.

Quoting sources, the WSJ report added that Intel has been pitching the idea to media companies and that the firm plans to offer US TV channels nationwide over the Internet in a bundle similar to subscriptions sold by cable- and satellite-TV operators.

Intel hopes to launch a service by the end of 2012, the report further said.

If plans push through, Intel will be joining many technology and electronics companies which have expressed desire to use the Internet to deliver bundles of live or on-demand TV channels. These include Sony, Dish Network, Microsoft, and Google, among others, the report said.
