Intel has sold its RFID business to US-based niche player Impinj.

Impinj said it has acquired for an undisclosed amount Intel's RFID unit that created the latter's R1000 RFID reader chip.

The R1000 chip, renamed as the Indy R1000, will be included in Impinj's line of UHF Gen 2 RFID products. The chip is targeted for fixed and mobile RFID readers.

The deal boosts Impinj's stock in the rapidly growing RFID market.

'As the RFID market matures and new passive UHF applications are enabled, the demand for highly integrated technology like the R1000 is growing,' said Michael Liard, RFID research director at ABI Research.
