Credit card firm JCB plans to offer over-the-air payments and other services using NFC (near field communication)-enabled handsets.

JCB announced a partnership with h CASSIS International to test over-the-air payments and other services using NFC (near field communication)-enabled handsets.

The two companies are looking to offer these services by April, including JCB credit card application.

Under the agreement, CASSIS is providing solutions that will enable customers to receive JCB card application and account information securely over-the-air on their handsets anywhere in the world.

"Secure over-the-air service is a key factor in mobile payment," noted Tom Okabe, senior vice president of global infrastructure and technologies at JCB.

Okabe added: 'NFC is going to happen in many markets soon, and we need to be ready for commercial deployment when it does."

NFC technology is promoted by a non-profit industry association established in 2004 by leading mobile communications, semiconductor and consumer electronics companies.

According to ABI Research forecast, 20 percent of the global mobile handset market will ship with built-in NFC capabilities by 2012.
