Kaspersky Lab has introduced new features to its cloud-based security solution for email and the Web, adding more powerful protection against threats, real-time monitoring capabilities, and more comprehensive reports and policy definitions for optimum management of mailboxes.

As cloud computing gains ground in the Asia-Pacific, hosted email security is also drawing more interest from organizations looking for more cloud-based services.

Jimmy Fong, Channel Sales Director, SEA, Kaspersky Lab, disclosed that in Malaysia alone, about a fourth of Malaysian companies are already using some form of cloud computing, according to research firm Frost & Sullivan. In 2012, Gartner's forecast is for total IT spending to reach RM 31.5 billion, or a 6.1 percent growth from 2011.

"Everybody is looking into the cloud and Kaspersky Lab as well. We would like to make sure that we have the right products and solutions for this market," he said at a press conference in Petaling Jaya.

Data from Kaspersky Lab's Global IT Security Risk Study showed that 31% of organizations have lost business data from malware attacks, and one in 10 have lost sensitive data from malware. Moreover, 91% have experienced at least one threat in the last 12 months globally.

Kaspersky Hosted Security (KHS) has basically two kinds of services - hosted email and hosted web.

"Hosted email is simply moving the protection into the cloud. Before you get any mails we already filtered them in the cloud to keep away the spam, the malware and the all the bad stuff and put that in quarantine," explained Bernie Bengler, Director, Cloud Services/SaaS, APAC, Kaspersky Lab. "It is actually a very simple process but it poses a lot of problems for organizations if they have to do it themselves because they have to have a mail server that is very powerful to handle 95% of unwanted mail."

"That is pretty much what we do with hosted mail - the sender sends an email, it goes to our data center, we look at it -- is it spam, is it a virus -- and we pass on the clean mail to the recipient. What we can do with email, we can also do with Web and in that case it is filtering of web content on the cloud," he added.
