Korea's telecom ministry plans to auction a single 2.5-GHz TD-LTE license in the second half of the year.

The ministry plans to auction one 40 MHz block of 2.5-GHz spectrum, Yonhap Newsreported, and the winning bidder will have the sole right to use 2.5-GHz spectrum for a period of four years and nine months.

Applications to take place in the auction will be accepted through to early June, and qualified participants will bid for the spectrum thereafter.

The auction will give Korea Mobile Internet (KMI) yet another chance to acquire the spectrum required to become the nation's fourth mobile operator.

KMI has tried five times to fulfil its ambition. The company had planned to place a bid for a TD-LTE license earlier this year, but withdrew its bid due to technical issues.

KMI is a consortium of South Korean MVNOs currently offering wireless broadband services based on the homegrown WiBro standard. The consortium hopes to roll out TD-LTE instead and become a proper mobile operator.
