Korea still on top by average internet speeds

Hong Kong trailed behind only South Korea as the country in Asia Pacific with the highest average internet connection speed during the third quarter, according to Akamai.

South Korea had both the highest speed in the region and the world, with its average connection spee, improving by 2.7% quarter-over-quarter to reach 25.3 Mbps,the vendor's latest State of the Internet report shows.

Hong Kong (16.3 Mbps) and Japan (15 Mbps) clinched the second and third spot globally and in Asia-Pacific.

Other countries in the global top 10 were: Switzerland (14.5 Mbps), Sweden (14.1 Mbps), Netherlands (14.0 Mbps), Ireland (13.9 Mbps), Latvia (13.4 Mbps), Czech Republic (12.3 Mbps), and Singapore (12.2 Mbps).

In Asia-Pacific, India had the lowest average connection speed at 2.0 Mbps and also the lowest peak speed in the region at 13.9 Mbps. The Philippines is slightly better with average broadband connection speed of 2.5 Mbps and the second lowest in the region.

The report noted that year-over-year changes were high across the Asia-Pacific region. All countries experienced very strong growth in average connection speeds, with Indonesia having largest year-over-year increase at 149%.

It was followed by Singapore (57% increase in average broadband connection speed), Thailand and the Philippines (39%), New Zealand (37%), China (3 %), and India and Hong Kong (29%).

More modest growth was seen in Australia (25%), Vietnam (22%), Taiwan (16%), South Korea (14%) and Japan (9.3%).

In terms of average peak connection speed, Hong Kong and Singapore were the only two Asia-Pacific countries with average peak connection speeds above 80 Mbps, registering year-on-year changes of 29% and 65%, respectively.

Indonesia (with average peak connection speed of 25.8 Mbps) had the largest yearly increase, at 166%, and was the only surveyed country to see its average peak connection speed more than double from the third quarter of 2013.

In terms of adoption rate for high broadband connection (>10 Mbps), South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan also led the region, with 81% and 55% adoption rates, respectively. The lowest adoption rates were seen in China (1.4%) and India (1.1%). Akamai said the Philippines and Vietnam were not included in the list because their adoption rates were below 1%.

Indonesia, with 3.3% adoption rate for high broadband, once again registered the biggest gain at 2,403% year-on-year change.

Meanwhile, average peak mobile connection speeds spanned an extremely broad range in the third quarter across the world, from 98 Mbps in Singapore down to 3.3 Mbps in Iran, according to the report. Nine countries also had average peak mobile connection speeds above 50 Mbps, while another 40 saw speeds above 10 Mbps.
