South Korea's KT has revealed plans to team up with US operator AT&T on 5G and SDN/NFV technology development.

Representatives of the two major operators met at the KT R&D Center last week to discuss potential areas of collaboration, BusinessKoreareported.

The collaboration will seek to leverage AT&T's leading role in the development of SDN/NFV technologies and KT's 5G technology development expertise, including its planned Network 3.0 Indigo 5G platform.

Details of the planned collaboration have not yet been disclosed. But the report cites KT Technology Convergence Center director Lee Dong-myeon as stating that the collaboration is expected to “create synergies to solve challenges of the telecom industry in the future.”

KT has already been collaborating with US operator Verizon to test the interoperability of their respective network orchestration platforms, under a deal reached earlier in the year. Verizon and KT are also jointly involved in the 5G Open Trial Specification Alliance, along with NTT DoCoMo and SK Telecom.
