South Korea's KT has announced it has won a 53 billion won ($47.3 million) contract to support a $1.8 billion nationwide broadband project in the Philippines.

KT has secured a deal with the Philippines's Converge ICT Solutions to build a fiber network along around 1,570km of main roads in the northern region of Luzon. The operator said it hopes the deal will lead to more such contracts with the provider in the future.

The deal forms part of Converge's $1.8 billion commitment to expand its broadband coverage throughout the Philippines over the next five years.

It also supports KT's goal of expanding its business presence and partnerships internationally, with a focus on Asia, Europe and Africa.

In recent years, KT has installed more than 3,400 miles of optical fiber networks in Myanmar, Bangladesh and other countries.

The operator plans to cooperate with a number of Korean small and mid-sized companies on the Philippines-based project, and the deployment is expected to be complete in June 2020.

The partnership with Converge ICT Solutions is a great opportunity to introduce our technological expertise in telecommunications network planning, construction and operation not only in the Philippines but also in neighboring countries," said KT head of future convergence and global businesses Yun Kyoung-Lim said.

"KT will continue its efforts in representing the Republic of Korea to the world as the global ICT leader."
