M1 is working with Singapore’s IDA to enable government agencies to quickly and affordably deploy smart devices and services at non-building sites such as bus stops, parks and along roadways.

M1 will install about 100 above-ground boxes and connect them to 100-Mbps enterprise-class fiber, as well as supply electrical power and space to house multiple computer servers.

The idea is to connect sensors, cameras and electronic signage at outdoor locations without having to dig up the road to access the fiber network, install a power generator or be located near to a building.

Willis Sim, M1’s director of product development and enterprise services, said that much like how fire hydrants allow firefighters to respond to fires without having to worry about logistics, “we hope to see a comprehensive network of ‘fiber hydrants’ across Singapore, enabling government agencies to deploy smart devices and services quickly and cost-effectively.”
