The Batam-Dumai-Melaka (BDM) submarine cable system, which directly connects Malaysia and Indonesia, began carrying commercial traffic on Friday.

The 400 km BDM system – a club cable backed by Telekom Malaysia, XL Axiata and Mora Telematika – consists of four fiber pairs providing 1.28 Tbps of bandwidth.

TM and XL are providing the landing stations in their respective countries.

Mohamad Rozaimy Abd Rahman, Executive Vice President of Global at TM, said in a statement the BDM cable would not only enhance capacity in the region and “cater to growing data needs and demand for better, reliable and lower latency international connectivity”, but also “serve as a gateway to Asia as more international organizations move their operations toward this region to leverage on the lower cost of operations here.”
