Malaysia's LTE operators are locked in a close battle for LTE dominance, with no one provider emerging as the 4G speed king, according to research from OpenSignal.

An analysis of LTE performance from Celcom, DiGi, Maxis and U Mobile from the wireless coverage mapping company finds that Malaysia's 4G networks have come close to matching the global average speed of 13.5Mbps.

DiGi, Maxis and U Mobile all provided average download speeds of between 12Mbps and 14Mbps, close to a three-way statistical tie.

Although there was no clear winner in LTE speed, OpenSignal gives Maxis a slight edge due to its superior LTE coverage.

Maxis 4G users were able to connect to its LTE network 70% of the time, placing it well ahead of not only its peers but of the majority of operators worldwide.

Maxis also emerged as the winner when measuring average speed across all data networks, with an overall download speed of 5.2Mbps.

Celcom was meanwhile found to be the worst performing of the four major operators on a national level in terms of speed, coverage and latency, but to fare better in individual regions such as Klang Valley, where it was tied for second in 4G coverage.
