Mars needs mobile heart monitors

This month's Best Repurposed Technology Award goes to Austria-based Telovital, which sells a mobile device called "clue" that allows medical specialists to remotely monitor the heart conditions of their patients.

The device, which is distributed in Southeast Asia by Bangkok-based Decisive Technology, uses sensors or electrodes to measure the heartbeat. The data can then be beamed via infrared or Bluetooth to a cellphone which can then transmit the data via GSM to a remote server.

Similar devices exist on the market, but the kicker - according to Decisive Technology president Ernst-Guenter Jung - is that the device was originally developed as part of a Russian Space Agency project to monitor the heart rates of cosmonauts on their proposed 2035 mission to Mars.
