Masergy brings NFV to global market

It is taking operators less time to dive into NFV than usual when it comes to new technologies. Yesterday, Masergy became the latest of the early adopters with an aggressive push to bring NFV-based services out of the lab and all the way to the enterprise market.

Powered by Overture's technology, which had its own release last week, Masergy is offering virtual firewalls and routers to its global enterprise customers.

So there's still a network interface device to be run at the customer premises, but just the one which can be set up to perform several functions remotely. And Masergy likes Overture's open approach, which lets various VNF vendors' software be mixed and matched depending on the desired solution.

They're starting with software-based Brocade routers and Fortinet firewalls, with SBC and WAN Acceleration next on the list.

That Masergy is moving quickly on this is no surprise. NFV promises a way for the managed network services provider to do more of its own cooking and thus gain a bigger piece of the pie. And getting it out there quickly means that if enterprises like it, there is some land to be grabbed.
