Maxis, a communications service provider in Malaysia, has revealed that it has expanded its HSDPA footprint to potentially serve more than 20,000 households in Penang.

Maxis said it has spent more than $3 million in order to deploy HSDPA across Penang, on top of its 3G network.

According to Maxis, the introduction of HSDPA to Penang follows positive feedback received from customers relating to the affordability and reliability of the Maxis Broadband service.

It said customers can now benefit from broadband access without needing to have a fixed telephone line.

The company aims to continue establishing broadband hub coverage in town centers in Malaysia, where need is higher, before expanding the service to the rest of the country. It intends to provide broadband to Penang, KlangValley and Johor Bahru by the first quarter of 2007.
