Last year proved to be a good one for Malaysia’s two largest operators, as Maxis delivered a 2.8% increase in full year net profit of 2.3 billion ringgit ($754 million) for 2010.

The result comes soon after Rival Telekom Malaysia posted decent profit growth for the same period.

Maxis’ revenue had risen 3% last year to hit 8.61 billion ringgit, while ebitda grew 1.8% to 4.42 billion. The firm had grown subscriptions by 1.66 million and results were also bolstered by strong non-voice revenues.

For the fourth quarter, subscription growth was 429,000, with customers reaching 13.9 million mark. This showing brought Maxis’ market share to 41%.

Non-voice revenue such as advanced data services, wireless broadband and short message services contributed to 41.5% of mobile revenue for Q4. The firm said takings from advanced data services comprised revenue from mobile internet browsing, content and device sales.

Maxis’ broadband revenue grew 5% in Q4 2010 to hit 111 million ringgit. The quarter’s overall showing was the best in its history.

“We complemented our iPhone and Blackberry success by adding popular Android based devices including tablets, to our smart devices range, bringing the internet faster and closer to our customers, which will be critical to secure future revenues,” Maxis CEO Sandip Das said.
