Spending on mobile internet infrastructure is surging 24% per year, as more and more customers flock to 3G and 4G networks.

The market for mobile internet infrastructure is also expected to continue to grow by an average of 20% per year through to 2015, according to TeleGeography and partner Synergy Research Group.

The research firms estimate that combined 3G and 4G subscribers will be nearing three billion by this time, and networks will need substantial upgrades to cope.

Some key equipment segments have been even more active, with mobile IP backhaul equipment spending currently growing 47% annually. By 2015, this market is expected to be more than triple its size from 2010.

The mobile multimedia gateway market is meanwhile growing at 42% per year.

Cisco is currently the market leader in both these segments, but is being challenged by Alcatel-Lucent and Tellabs in the former and Ericsson and NSN in the latter.

Synergy's Jeremy Duke said he expects to see “some major shifts in market share over the coming years” as vendors compete to capture share of the new revenue opportunities.
