Saudi Arabia-based Mobily has awarded contracts worth $120 million to Samsung and Huawei, for the construction of LTE infrastructure.

Mobily, which is majorly owned by telecoms giant Etisalat, announced the deals at Mobile World Congress 2011.

The operator said the contracts covered the commissioning of 2,400 LTE towers in more than 30 cities across Saudi Arabia, and an upgrade of Bayanat Al Oula’s Wimax infrastructure.

Mobily has 5 million customers out of which 2.3 million are subscribed to data packages.

The contracts come on the back of LTE field tests that Mobily conducted last year.

Mobily’s managing director and CEO Khalid Al Kaf said the contracts’ signings made Mobily the first operator in the Middle East and North Africa region to officially embrace LTE.
