Australian incumbent Telstra and Ericsson have agreed to collaborate on the development of 5G standards and technologies.

The companies will collaborate to develop 5G radio access and core network technologies and on 5G field trials.

Specifically, the companies will work on 3GPP standards for 5G and collaborate to demonstrate key capabilities for a 5G network core.

Telstra will also work on Ericsson's 5G radio test bed and conduct 5G field trials in Australia. Finally, the companies will run a proof of concept for Machine Type Communications (MTC) IoT standards.

Telstra was one of the early adopters of LTE – its network first launched in September 2011 – and was also among the first operators to deploy LTE-Advanced.

“Delivering the benefits of 5G requires an end-to-end approach that includes devices, RAN and core networks,” Ericsson Australia, New Zealand and Fiji head Håkan Eriksson said.

“The 5G collaboration with Telstra will deepen our understanding of latest innovations, architectures and use cases important to 5G. It also presents an opportunity to understand how Machine Type Communications (MTC) a key component of 5G can transform many industries including utilities, mining, logistics and agriculture to mention but a few.”
