MyRepublic launches LTE trial in Singapore

The operator vying to become Singapore's fourth mobile operator, MyRepublic, has commenced a trial of LTE services in the Jurong East area.

MyRepublic is offering unlimited mobile data services to 1,000 testers that live and work in the area, Stuffreported.

Testers will be given a Xiaomi 4G handset and instructed to help stress-test the network. The test area only covers around one block, as well as an interchange and MRT station.

Participants will have unlimited data within the trial area until the testing period ends on December 20.

Unlimited data will be a key differentiator if MyRepublic succeeds in its bid to become Singapore's fourth telco.

MyRepublic last month completed an S$23 million ($16.5 million) funding round to help pursue its ambitions, and has estimated that it will take around S$250 million to build a mobile network if it secures a license.

But Singapore's incumbent operators have objected to a proposal by regulator IDA to hold a separate spectrum auction with a lower reserve price that is only open to companies interested in becoming the market's fourth telco.
