Myanmar's newest mobile operator MyTel is deploying a satellite mobile backhaul network to help prepare for the expected growth in mobile traffic.

The operator, a joint venture between Vietnam's Viettel and a consortium of local companies, has contracted Communication and Commerce (Com & Com) to deploy the backhaul network.

Com & Com, itself a joint venture between Myanmar's Terabit Wave and Vietnam's OSB JSC, will provide a solution based on satellite equipment specialist Newtec's mobile satellite backhaul and satellite modem products.

The solution will use Newtec's Dialog multi-service platform, including its Mx-DMA dynamic bandwidth allocation technology. Com & Com will take full responsibility for managing the network based on the Dialog platform's network management system.

“Satellite communication is the most cost-effective, fastest and reliable way of bridging the digital divide in Myanmar as it can be deployed in even the most rural areas in a very short time,” Com & Com managing director Theingi Lin said.

“By blending Newtec’s innovative technologies and Com & Com’s fully managed satellite services, we are confident that we can enhance MyTel’s offering and meet the growing demand for connectivity while ensuring optimal end-user experience.”

MyTel announced earlier this month that it has achieved 70% population coverage with its all-4G network months after launching in March.
