NEC has launched what it is billing as the world's first MVNO control system that employs network functions virtualization (NFV).

The vMNO-SL suite can be used to establish connectivity between an MVNO's network and their carrier's mobile network.

It is designed to allow MVNOs to avoid having to deploy expensive hardware gateway systems to establish connections with operators. It runs on a general-purpose Intel Architecture server.

The system has functions including security and certification, traffic and communication band restrictions, filtering of communications data and collection of charging information.

NEC said the product has the potential to reduce opex for both MVNOs and their enablers, as well as the capex involved in rolling out MVNO services.
