Japan's NEC Corp. said it has established an R&D Center for Wimax systems in Taiwan.

The center will initially serve as an interoperability testing center for local CPE vendors and NEC's Wimax system, called 'PasoWings'.

NEC also announced plans to eventually turn it into an application development center for Wimax.

The establishment of the R&D center is part of an agreement by NEC to support the M-Taiwan Project following an agreement signed in May 2007.

As part of the ongoing M-Taiwan project, NEC has jointly carried out multiple Wimax trials Tatung InfoComm, one of six operators granted licensed in August 2007.

NEC conducted Wimax trials in Hua-Lien City in early 2007.

Rival vendor Motorola also recently announced an interoperability lab center in Taiwan in partnership with local firm M-Skylink.
