Nokia unveils first Symbian 3 Phone

Nokia has unveiled its first phone powered by the open-source Symbian^3 platform, the Nokia N8, a day after its début was spoiled by a Russian blogger.

The handset has integrated social networking as well as the Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation suite, Nokia said.

It was criticized by Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, who said an early prototype model he tested was no better than Nokia’s X6 device, and that pictures taken on the N8’s 12-megapixel camera were of similar quality to the Sony Ericsson Satio.

In a response to Murtazin’s review, Nokia said the handset he used was “a very early, pre-production prototype with dated software that is not yet ready.”

The firm pledged to hunt down the source of the security breach, but in an apparent swipe at Apple's strong-arm tactics in response to the leaking of the iPhone 4, Nokia said it would tread lightly in its investigation.

“Whilst we are determined to protect our intellectual property and maintain the surprise when a shiny new gadget is introduced, we are not going to do so at the expense of the working conditions we enjoy here at Nokia,” the Finnish vendor said.

The company also asked for its prototype back now that the official news is out.
