Nortel announced Tuesday that the School of Management at Fudan University in Shanghai is implementing its unified communications products.

The new unified communications platform will replace the school's legacy communication system which couldn't support multimedia applications such as video conferencing, instant messaging, screen broadcasting, and digital bulletin boards, said Nortel in a statement.

Integrated with desktop 'soft phones', the new platform ensures teachers in the school, who travel extensively around the world, can enhance communication with each other by using audio and video conferencing, find me/follow me, instant messaging and presence and voicemail services, Nortel added.

'The school of management at Fudan University is constantly striving to enhance our teaching and research environment for teachers and to provide students with the most technologically advanced study experience,' said Bill Sun, CIO at Fudan University. 'The implementation of Nortel's unified communication platform means that we now join the few universities in China that can allow teachers to collaborate and communicate anytime, anywhere.'

The new platform will be built around Nortel's flagship Communication Server 1000, Multimedia Communication Server 5100, and Ethernet Routing Switch 4500 delivering Power-over-Ethernet capabilities to Nortel IP phone 2002.
