NTT Com, Alcatel-Lucent Japan and Fujitsu have jointly developed a point-of-concept for Virtual Network Platform as a Service (VNPaaS).

The ETSI Network Functions Virtualisation Industry Specification Group (NFV ISG) has approved the point of concept for VNPaaS, the companies announced.

VNPaaS technology will now be demonstrated at the Bankoku Shinryokan Resort MICE Facility in Okinawa on May 14.

Developing server architecture as a platform of telecom networks is designed to address the increasing complexity of service applications caused by the virtualization of large-scale telecom systems.

“Conventionally, reliability and scalability functions should be realized by applications. As advances are made in virtual network construction technology, the software scale of each service application will increase due to the numerous functions that the software will have in the future,” the announcement states.

“However, the proposed platform technology supports reliability and scalability functions for each service application and enables faster development of service applications. Moreover, the platform that consists of distributed hardware resources enables faster system recovery, for instance, in the event of natural disasters in the future.”

As part of the collaboration, NTT is providing the telecom carrier requirements for the proof-of-concept system. Alcatel-Lucent Japan is providing its carrier-grade NFV platform CloudBand, and Fujitsu is providing the middleware.
