Ocean Networks has tapped Ocean Specialists for full turnkey network development services for the proposed South America Pacific Link cable system. It's a project that has been in the works for a fewyears now and I had been wondering where it was at.
The latest plan for the SAPL cable system consists of two phases. The first phase will run from Jacksonville, Florida down across Panama to the west coast of South America and on down to Valparaiso in northern Chile, with branch off to Ecuador along the way as well.
The second phase will branch off and run out to the Hawaiian island of Oahu where it will be able to interconnect with other submarine cables heading to the APAC region. If all goes well, with OSI taking the wheel the SAPL network is planned to be ready-for-service in early 2019.
There are a number of cable systems jumping off from the US East Coast these days heading east and south, but this one heads west as well.
The Hawaii/Ecuador link was originally the main idea, but the link between Florida and the western coast of South America is first on the to-do list now.
It's still a pretty ambitious project that is surely looking for more backers, e.g. of the big content variety.
