Oil exploration firm MedcoEnergi has deployed a wireless mesh network connecting oil rigs located in the southern region of Oman.

The network enables transmission of drilling information and other critical data from these oil rigs to the main camp office.

Oman-based Hussam Technology Company (HTC) implemented the project using a wireless mesh solution from MeshDynamics.

The solution includes solar power systems to power the mesh nodes. These nodes run on the 5.8GHz band due to higher transmission power requirements.

The network links the drilling rigs with bandwidths of 36Mbps to 54Mbps, enabling email and Internet connections and the exchange of drilling information between the rigs.

MedcoEnergi's oil rigs move around an area of 250 square miles typically every 15-20 days, according to HTC.

To address this requirement, the mesh network consists of wireless hops every seven to nine kilometers consisting of both point-to-point links and point-to-multipoint links.
