Less than three weeks after switching on its network and just a week after officially launching services, Ooredoo Myanmar announced it has already attracted 1 million customers.

At a press conference to announce the milestone, Ooredoo Myanmar CEO Ross Cormack said the company has seen unprecedented demand for services in Myanmar, with some people queueing overnight to buy a compatible SIM.

“The response to our launch has been inspiring,” Cormack said. “Pent-up demand for mobile communication services has surpassed even our expectations.”

He said the Ooredoo Myanmar team currently consists of around 1,000 employees, 800 of which were hired locally. The company also has 6,500 dealers selling services and credit top-up purchases are available at 30,000 points of sale.

Cormack said Ooredoo has a target of expanding its network to cover 25 million people by the end of the year.

Ooredoo switched on its UMTS900 3G network on August 3, and formally launched services two weeks later.

In an indication of the challenges Ooredoo will be facing with its network rollout, rival nationwide mobile licensee Telenor recently revealed it had uncovered and rectified incidences of child labor at several of its Myanmar base station rollout sites.
