Australian operator Optus has completed an A$42.2 million ($30.5 million) expansion of its mobile network in the island state of Tasmania.

The Singtel subsidiary has deployed 37 new sites across the state in the last 12 months, taking its total to 151 and exceeding its target of deploying 35 new sites by July next year.

The new sites include 17 new base stations in Tasmania's two largest cities Hobart and Launceston as well as surrounding areas.

The company has committed a further A$4.5 million to build another eight sites by March next year, spread across the state.

Meanwhile Optus subsidiary Optus Business has announced it has won a three year, A$6 million deal to provide whole-of-department telecoms services to the Australian government's Department of Health.

The contract will see Optus Business consolidate the Department of Health’s telecommunication products and services under a single service agreement, covering WAN services, as well as the supply of mobile, voice and a range of other services to the department's 5,000 users.

Optus Business managing director John Paitaridis noted that with the new agreement, Optus Business is now providing services for three of the four largest government departments in Australia.

“We look forward to working with the Department of Health to support their digitalization and innovation agenda, through the provision of high performance infrastructure and ICT services,” he said.
