Oracle to buy Tekelec in networking push

IT giant Oracle has revealed plans to acquire OSS vendor Tekelec for an undisclosed sum, as it ramps up efforts to break into the network operator solutions market.

Tekelec provides network signaling, policy control, and subscriber data management software to telecom network operators.

Oracle said it plans to integrate these solutions into its Oracle Communications portfolio for service providers.

The planned purchase comes a month after Oracle announced the $1.7 billion purchase of networking equipment vendor Acme Packet. The company also acquired SDN vendor Xsigo in July last year.

Oracle SVP Bhaskar Gorti said once the acquisitions are complete, the company plans to combine capabilities from Oracle, Acme Packet and Tekelec to provide operators with “the most complete solution [incorporating] customer engagement, business and network operations, service delivery and end user applications.”

This is a concrete acknowledgement of Oracle's ambitions to become a major player in the telecom network equipment market.

Oracle is not just purchasing product lines - Acme Packet and Tekelec between them have hundreds of customers in global telecom markets. Their reach may help Oracle achieve its goal.
