PCCW contract workers have threatened to strike over plans to slice wages by up to 10%.

The Hong Kong carrier will make deep cuts in its contract worker budget, which will lead to lower wages for at least 1,500 workers, reports the South China Morning Post. The affected workers are expected to be mainly technical support staff.

Union leaders have said they will consider their options once they learn the extent of the pay cuts, but have promised to call a strike if they reach 10%.

The union has planned a protest at PCCW's office on Tuesday, and has sought advice from the Federation of Trade Unions and the Labour Department.

PCCW has slashed contract staff salaries by over 50% since 2002.
