Papua New Guinea's acting telecoms, ICT and energy minister Xavier Victor has warned operators to alert their mobile customers when they are reaching the end of their data bundle credits.

The minister has asserted that operators are making millions of kina (hundreds of thousands of dollars) by allowing customers' excess data usage to eat into their available credits, The Nationalreported.

In response mobile operators have insisted that they already keep customers notified. Telikom PNG said it does alert customers when their credits are being depleted but acknowledged there is room for improvement.

Currently Telikom PNG customers are alerted when they have used 80% of their available data. But the company is open to introducing ways to improve the customer experience in this regard.

bmobile-Vodafone said it also sends alert messages when data usage reaches 80%, and has denied the claim that companies are making money by allowing customers to exceed their usage without notification.
