Qualcomm has set up a new subsidiary to work on integrating its technology with mobile open source platforms.

The new company, Qualcomm Innovation Center (QuIC), will focus on open source software such as Linux and Webkit, and on operating systems such as Symbian, Android and Chrome.

“Open source and community-driven software development is becoming increasingly important to the wireless industry, and QuIC is committed to meaningful participation in these development efforts” said Rob Chandhok, a Qualcomm senior vice president who has been named president of QuIC.

“QuIC engineers have an intimate knowledge of how to hardware-optimize the performance of mobile operating systems and the software applications that run on them,” Qualcomm said.

Chandhok will speak at the Symbian Exchange and Expo in London tomorrow.
