India's Reliance Communications has contacted its remaining 2G customers in three telecom circles to port out to other operators in advance of the switch-off of the network in those markets.

The operator has sent text messages to its roughly 1 million 2G customers in West Bengal, Bihar and Assam informing them that they will need to port for continued coverage, the Economic Times reported.

RCom's rights to the 900-MHz spectrum holdings it had been using in the three circles expires on December 12. The operator did not win back its spectrum in the circles during the March auction.

Most of the operator's 17 million customers in the circles have upgraded to the operator's 3G network in the market, but around a million have not.
RCom recently entered a 2G and 3G intra-circle roaming pact with Vodafone India to address any 2G coverage challenges in the markets. But the report states that the operator is not too concerned with losing the remaining 2G customers as the loss of revenue will be offset by reduced opex costs.
