The recession is helping drive demand for high-quality videoconferencing on Asian desktops.

As a result LifeSize, headquartered in Austin, Texas, is seeing a boom in interest in its solution, which can support HD-quality video on the desktop.

It can send 720p, or HD-level video quality of 720p across as little as 768kbps connection, says William Yu, director of Asia-Pacific sales.

LifeSize has sold 20,000 units since the first product shipped in 2006. Last year it sold more than 1,500 to Asian customers such as Hyundai and Haier, shipping through Asian carriers, including SingTel, PCCW and Tata, as well as resellers.

The firm has 200 employees and was founded in 2003 by former Polycom employees, including Craig Malloy, who had created ViewStation, which he sold to Polycom in 1998.

Yu said the economic downturn, the cuts in corporate travel budgets and current swine flu scare are have been driving takeup of LifeSize.

"Beyond that, there is the environment. Businesses and their customers want to be seen to be clean and green," he said.
