Singapore's Republic Polytechnic held an IoT Industry Day to announce a series of new initiatives designed to nurture talent in the field of IoT.

At the event, co-organized by the School of Infocomm (SOI) and School of Engineering (SEG), the school announced new initiatives including a new Specialist Diploma in Internet of Things.

The course allows professionals to deep dive into IoT, which requires advanced integration skills and end-to-end thinking. The course is also designed to equip diploma or degree-level graduates and professionals with advanced integration skills and end-to-end thinking to meet a spectrum of needs across various IoT deployments.

Participants will gain hands-on experience with industry standard technologies such as specialized sensors, and exposure to industry projects on IoT, especially in smart city applications.

Upon completion of the program, participants will be well placed to effectively apply and use a range of IoT technologies. These include the development of IoT solutions that apply data analytics, cloud computing, big data and machine learning, as well as the ability to design, build and test a complete IoT solution.

Intake for the course begins in October 2017.

In line with its efforts to strengthen the IoT pipeline, RP will also be signing two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with technology services companies Sierra Solutions and Allin Technologies.

Students will benefit from enriched learning experiences through a range of internship and mentorship opportunities, academic awards and scholarships. Students and staff will also have opportunities to collaborate with both companies on industry projects and research related to IoT.

In addition, RP and Sierra Solutions will jointly develop the RP-Sierra Healthcare Innovation Lab for the purpose of product development activities in Digital Health and Wellness related projects. Such activities include staff consultancy, research and development and students’ final year projects.

Meanwhile, the IoT Makerspace Lab is now officially open to students and staff. The IoT Makerspace Lab will facilitate development of RP staff and students’ IoT capabilities by deepening collaboration with industry partners in innovation for interoperable solutions and services.

The lab will enable organizations and stakeholders from various industries to experience IoT in action and achieve breakthrough thinking.
