Samsung aims to launch 5G-based products in time for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang.

Speaking at the ITU's 5G Global Summit, Samsung head of communications research Cheun Kyung-whoon said the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2020 will be an ideal time to showcase 5G technology, the Korea Herald said.

Samsung has been an official wireless device and equipment partner to the Games since the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998. Its current agreement will be effective until 2020.

Samsung this week entered a 5G research partnership with SK Telecom, signing an MoU to start joint research on 5G technology and service development.

The companies have agreed to co-operate on standardization work for the technology, ascertain the best frequency band for 5G implementation, and conduct RD on next-generation small cells, massive MIMO and other advanced supporting network technologies.

SK Telecom is also collaborating with Ericsson on 5G R&D, including joint research into next-generation small cells, ultra-wideband low latency (below 1ms) technology, gigabyte-level transmission technology and FDD/TDD convergence.

The 5G standard is expected to encompass technologies capable of data rates of up to 1Gbps per user, up to 1,000 times more data capacity than LTE.
