Samsung Electronics has teamed up with four Hong Kong educational organizations to launch a project to provide free e-learning tools to local schools.

The company last week launched the Samsung Smart School Citizenship Project, which will provide free electronic devices to primary, secondary and special schools. In the 2014-15 educational year, 67 in-need schools will benefit from the scheme.

The initiative aims to support the government's Fourth Strategy on IT in Education policy, announced earlier this year. It has been co-organized by the Hong Kong Education City and Association of IT Leaders in Education with the support of the eLearning Consortium (eLC) and Hong Kong Institute of Family Education (HKIFE).

The strategy aims to promote more interactive, self-driven and collaborative learning in Hong Kong schools by refurbishing their IT infrastructure and equipping all classrooms with WiFi access.

Samsung has committed to investing over HK$10 million ($1.3 million) this year towards the project.

Each school will be provided with 22 to 40 Galaxy Note 10.1 tablets preinstalled with Samsuing School Solution, as well as one multi-function printer.

“A number of countries, including Hong Kong, are taking an active role in e-learning,” said Victor Cheng, executive director of Hong Kong Education City. “For some schools that are already fully-equipped and well-planned, sufficient resources is the key to open students to e-learning opportunities.”
