Samsung yesterday took the lid off its bada smartphone platform, showing off both it and the accompanying SDK to a London crowd.

The first bada handsets are now expected to launch in the first half of 2010, Samsung revealed.

Bada will support multiple forms of interactivity, including flash control, web control, motion sensing, and vibration control, and spout Samsung's TouchWiz user interface, the company said.

But Samsung didn't provide much more detail on the platform during what was supposed to be its launch than it had last month, when it first announced bada.

Samsung did say that the launch will be accompanied by an app store, which will be available from over 50 countries from the beginning.

To support the development of apps for the platform, Samsung has launched the Bada Developers Challenge, allocating a $2.7 million prize pool for winning developers as it seeks to lure them away from competing platforms such as Nokia's Ovi.
