SAP has become the latest IT firm to set a carbon emissions reduction target, aiming to reduce emissions by 51% of the 2007 level by 2020.
The target, which includes directly and indirectly-generated greenhouse gas emissions, is equivalent to the company's total 2000, SAP said. It said it would use its own solutions to monitor and manage the program.
The German software firm said it would also expand its solutions for environment, health and safety (EHS) management, offered jointly with partner TechniData AG, and appointed its first chief sustainability officer.
The new position would help manage the risks to market share and market capitalization, the company said.
"SAP understands that its long-term success is directly related to both appropriately addressing sustainability internally and to enabling its customers to meet the same challenges," it said in a statement.
SAP said it would sell a line of EHS applications co-developed with TechniData that would help customers ensure they were meeting EHS requirements and policies.
