Singapore's Mass Rail Transit (MRT) system will allow access to 3G wireless services for commuters in its North East Line.

Australia's Andrew will be the technology provider working with infrastructure service provider IntraWave.

The upgrade will support 3G applications and services from local carriers SingTel Mobile, StarHub Mobile and MobileOne, Andrew said. 3G will enable high-bandwidth applications such as video calls, video and music downloads and Internet inside the trains.

Andrew said it will deploy its ION-M fiber distributed antenna system in the underground, with remote units installed at each of the line's 16 stations connecting into the system for 2G and 3G coverage throughput.

The company, which previously designed the MRT's 2G network, expects to complete the upgrade by the end of the year.
