The development of a vibrant ICT sector is essential to bridge social divides and deliver effective government services, said Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Information, Communications & the Arts.

Kicking off CommunicAsia yesterday, Lui said Singapore is partnering with a number of countries to share its experience in national infocomm planning.

Lui cited strong growth projections for ICT spending in Asia, noting that, “despite the economic downturn,” Singapore’s ICT sector had grown 8% in 2009 to S$62.74 billion ($45b).”

Giving a progress update on the country’s major ICT initiatives, he said the next-gen NBN project is on track to reach 60% of households by the end of this year and achieve nationwide coverage in two years.

He said seven proposals had been accepted to deploy services for the program, including an interactive multimedia kiosk and remote storage.
