Singapore's new converged telecoms and media regulator the Infocomm and Media Development Authority (IMDA) launched last week.

The new agency has been tasked with helping Singapore seize opportunities in the converging telecoms and media sectors.

IMDA has been created through the merger between the former Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and the Media Development Authority of Singapore. Plans for the merger were first announced in January as part of the government's Infocomm Media 2025 plan.

The agency will be joined by the Government Technology Organization, which will be in charge of driving digital transformation in the public sector.

The Straits Times quotes Singapore's ICT minister Yaacob Ibrahim of stating at the launch that “IMDA's mission is to lead Singapore forward into a digital future where infocomm-media convergence and technological change will change the way we live, work and play."

In addition, the agency is seeking to update and streamline the Telecommunications Act to ensure that regulations for the sector keep pace with technology. The agency will also be tasked with using technology including smart city equipment and IoT devices to improve the lives of citizens.
