SingTel has revealed it expects to achieve Singapore-wide coverage for its LTE-Advanced network next month.

The LTE-A network will soon cover at least 95% of outdoor areas giving a minimum signal of three bars at street level, Straits Timesreported.

SingTel launched its 300Mbps LTE-A network in July last year after a soft launch in May, and opened the network up to smartphones in August.

The network offers typical downlink speeds of 20Mpbs to 140Mbps, compared to the 16Mbps to 70Mbps available on a traditional LTE network.

Rival M1 achieved 95% coverage in outdoor areas for its own LTE-A network in December, and StarHub is aiming for nationwide coverage in the third quarter.

More LTE-A handsets are meanwhile expected to reach Singapore in the second half of the year. At present the only compatible handsets are four smartphone models from Samsung.

According to the GSA, as of late January 20 operators in 15 countries had launched 300Mbps Cat 6 LTE-A, and another 22 networks are either in deployment or at the trial stage.

Besides Singapore, commercial Cat 6 LTE networks are operational in South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia and multiple European markets.
