SingTel is attempting to strengthen its services portfolio with the launch of an e-book service that caters to the needs of the local market.

Named skoob, the e-book storefront sells the works of both local and international writers as well as educational guides for students in local primary and secondary schools. SingTel claims skoob is the first e-book service to be based out of Singapore.

SingTel’s chief of digital home Goh Seow Eng said skoob’s primary aim was to meet the market’s need for locally themed study guides for students, which international e-book vendors could not fulfil. Goh claimed SingTel is looking to further enhance content on skoob via the inclusion of sample test papers for local students.

Content on skoob includes more than 39,000 local and international titles and can be viewed on smartphones, tablets and PCs. The service, like several international e-book services, also offers several classics for free download.

The service is available on smartphones and tablets running Android and Apple’s iOS via a free application. Skoob can also be accessed via standard browsers on PCs and Macs. Customers can download e-books on up to 5 different devices.

Payment can be made online via Singapore-based credit cards, with SingTel customers having the option for purchases to be charged directly to their monthly bills.
