SingTel, Vodafone and Orange have reportedly been given a second chance at a bite of the apple that is the Myanmar telecom market.

The operators and other international players have been invited to submit an offer for entering a joint venture with state-owned operator Myanmar Posts and Telecom (MPT), sources told the Financial Times.

The joint venture would compete with the mobile operations planned by Telenor and Ooredoo, the two winners of the recent tender for nationwide telecom licenses.

SingTel and UK-based Vodafone and Orange had all participated in the tender. SingTel and Orange were not selected, although Orange was chosen as the runner-up.

Vodafone had planned to bid in a joint venture with China Mobile, but the operators pulled their joint offer before the licenses were awarded.

MPT managing director managing director U Aung Maw last month confirmed the operator was in talks for a mobile JV with an international operator, and Orange confirmed its participation in the talks.

The executive also said MPT was in talks with operators in Singapore as well as Japan and some other Western countries.
